Max Goes To Watch Kinky Boots

On Thursday 2 April, Max attended a performance of Kinky Boots: The Musical, leaving the theatre thoroughly impressed by the production's infectious energy, exceptional music, and talented cast.

Before attending, Max had been looking forward to seeing Matt Cardle in the production. Unfortunately, Cardle was not performing at Thursday's performance, which initially came as a disappointment.

However, it wasn't long before the cast won over the audience with their energy and talent. Leading the production was Johannes Radebe as Lola, delivering a truly unforgettable performance. Best known to many from Strictly Come Dancing, Radebe proved himself to be a commanding musical theatre performer, bringing confidence, charisma and emotion to one of the show's most iconic roles.

His stage presence was magnetic from the moment he appeared, while his vocals and dancing combined effortlessly to create a performance that was both powerful and deeply moving.

Joining him, Liam Doyle impressed as Charlie Price, portraying the struggling shoe factory owner with warmth, authenticity and emotional depth. Doyle's vocal performance was exceptional throughout the evening, and his chemistry with Radebe created many of the production's most memorable moments. Together, the pair perfectly captured the unlikely friendship at the heart of the story.

One of the biggest highlights for Max was the music. Featuring songs written by Cyndi Lauper, the score is packed with energetic anthems, emotional ballads and unforgettable ensemble numbers. Every song was performed with passion by the cast, making it impossible not to become swept up in the show's infectious atmosphere.

The production itself was equally impressive. The choreography was energetic, the costumes—particularly those worn by Lola and the Angels—were spectacular, and the colourful set design complemented the fast-paced storytelling throughout. Every aspect of the show felt polished and professionally executed.

Beyond its entertainment value, Kinky Boots continues to deliver an important message about acceptance, identity and celebrating individuality. The production balances comedy with genuine emotion, leaving audiences laughing one moment and reflecting the next.

Although Max had hoped to see Matt Cardle perform, he left the theatre feeling that he had witnessed a first-class production. Johannes Radebe's commanding performance as Lola, combined with Liam Doyle's excellent portrayal of Charlie, ensured the evening exceeded expectations.

Reflecting on the performance, Max described Kinky Boots as "one of the most enjoyable musicals" he has seen in recent years, praising its uplifting message, incredible soundtrack and talented cast.
